Archimedes was one of the last ancient Greek mathematicians, following in the footsteps of Plato, Socrates, and Euclid. Historians call him "the wise one," "the master" and "the great geometer". Although he was also a scientist and inventor, it was his work in mathematics that has ranked him as one of the three most important mathematicians in history, along with Sir Isaac Newton and Carl Friedrich Gauss. Further, he was one of the first scientists to perform experiments to prove his theories. Archimedes’ discoveries in mathematics continue to have an impact today. Historians do not know a great deal about Archimedes’ life. Archimedes was born around 287 B.C. in Syracuse, Sicily, which was part of Greece at that time. We know his father was an astronomer, which Archimedes mentioned in one of his works, "The Sand Reckoner".
